Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 12:00, our local skating rink is open to eight-year-old (and under) children only. I thought this was fabulous because my daughter is just learning how to skate. It’s terrifying when you have older, more experienced skaters flying around you and you’re flailing your arms like you might actually take flight. (Aw, she’s so cute.)

Anyway, it was better than I could hope. We were actually the first on the floor! (And, yes, I mean “we”.) I have to tell you I was more worried about myself. I thought it would be like riding a bike but I was pretty shaky! I actually sat down on the carpet and scooted to the floor to stand up. (I know you’re embarrassed for me.)

Well, I’m telling you this to give you forewarning of what to expect when it’s your turn and to tell you what else I noticed – there were many single dads there with their kids. I was shocked. I was only one of two moms there. Those are some good odds ladies! LOL!

There were three types of dads from what I could tell. There was the dad who sat on his laptop the whole time, the dad who was too cool to do anything but observe, and the dad who actually put skates on and went out there on the floor with his kids. Now, ladies, if I was looking (and I’m not), he’s the one who my eye would be on.

There was actually a dad out there trying to learn how to skate himself! Now, he wasn’t single as his wife was there to cheer him on. (They were cute.) You could tell he was really happy to get to the back wall where he could have something to hold on to. I tried hard not to get tickled but he looked exhausted! And what a cute site to see his five year old in front of him, head down really concentrating and dad behind her, head down really concentrating. Love it!

I do think this is something you single moms out there should think about. A dad who takes his kids skating has something going for him, I think. And if he actually happens to put on a pair of skates to join them? Maybe you two should accidentally meet on the floor? (Um, just do it in a way that no one ends up injured.) Have fun!
